End of the road for the moment… 27,000 miles, 14 months on the road, 18 countries and 3 revolutions

Well, after Cape Town we went on to Cape Agulhas the southern most point in Africa, over 27,000 miles from our start point in Frome, Somerset.

The van had performed spectacularly with only a few problems and nothing that stopped us in our tracks. Lucy’s inspiration with a coat hanger when the gearstick came off in Tanzania was the only real drama, with everything else we were able to limp on.
We spent the last week with an old school friend Roddy and Nicola his wife, in Somerset West and then drove on the beautiful route 62 through the Klein Karoo, which is Afrikaans for Little Karoo with its mass of flowers and Ostrich farms. We went on to Storms River Mouth to meet our friends Larry and Sharon who we had met in Addis Ababa they were heading north on their BMW motor bikes when we first met them

and we were heading south. We went up in their microlights…now that’s something to do when you get older instead of golf!

and stayed with their friend Johan who runs an amazing hunting business….. Hunt Africa
We have now put the van on a boat home from Port Elizabeth.
Next stop California for Christmas

    Hi Lucy & Rory –

Very inspiring to read of your travels through Africa in the Sprinter! My wife was raised in York, born in South Africa, and I’m still hoping to make it there one day soon and tour about.

I’ve taken the liberty of writing a blog post about your adventures on my Sprinter RV blog, please take a look if you have a moment. Any more comments you have about how the Sprinter has worked out for you, so far? We are supposed to get MB 4×4 Sprinters in the US by 2013, we certainly envy their widespread European availability.

    Cheers,

    Greg

Well hell .. suddenly in middle of the working day why did I think of the van people!? No idea .. so on the way home .. what a thought?!! can’t quite work out when you are actually arriving home .. but CANT WAIT TO CATCH UP .. and a little confused about the christmas in California .. if thats before or after UK . anyway .. I’ve no doubt will find out.

Ridiculously enough we are off out to SA in Nov/Dec to a wedding and to see Guy and Allie as he is now working out there .. his first job as a foreign correspondent (be it for CHinese TV Eng Channel!!) but enormously exciting and rather eerie as of course it was where we met. So anyway with weddings and children and cottage rent paying for it .. we are off for a couple of weeks which will be wonderufl. Obviously all well in your world .. mightily impressed Mrs M that you ventured on a microlyte .. no ways!!
Loads and loads of love to you bth.

    Dear Lucy and Rory,

I was just thinking of sending you a Christmas card and went to look up your address………. I found i had written down your web site but had forgotten all about it. I have only just read the diary for November and December 2010!!! If i had known you were going to the Tandys you could have seen my father who lives around the corner – another time no doubt.
Thrilled to see you are alive and ticking and that you have made it to Cape Town. I very much look forward to reading about your epic journey and seeing the excellent photos.
Trust all your family are thriving. Ben is still doing his music, Gus has just started with Commerz Bank and Eloise is fed up with Newcastle Uni and suspect she is going to give it up. I am still busy decorating and have one more trip to Taipei before Christmas to complete an apartment.
Much love to you all. Nigel and Marie Lou

    Nice trip & nice Sprinter!
Could you maybe give a overview of the technical problems you encountered?
Maybe you have some good advice as I am also looking for a sprinter 4×4 for a expeditions camper!

Hi there, love your Blogs and website. Some any helpful advice would be most welcome please?
We’re just about to start our own world adventure and really can’t decide between the rugged tough MAN 8.136 ex army boxvan (13mpg) or I really love the idea of the more economical 4×4 Sprinter conversion. However alot of the Forums seem full of people being uncomplimentary about the Sprinter’s off-road ability and some real life advice would be great?
So what MPG did you get and did you ever find the MB short on ability? Also did the body warp ever cause interior damage, (someone mentioned screens cracking over very uneven ground?
Thankyou so much in advance and hopefully we’ll see you on the road somewhere?
    Take care Steve & Annie
